“Judy Arisman, designer for our first book, Redemption went on to win four national book awards, and is widely considered the most critically acclaimed book on its topic. We believe that the cover and interior design played no small part in that success. Judy is an experienced and talented design professional. She says that her designs “inspire, engage, and endure.” We couldn’t agree more, and this is one reason why we will always use Arisman Design Studio.”

THE INNER GAME OF YOGAMy client gave me a black-and-white photo for this biographical book cover. I chose a cool blue to strike a mood for the nightclub atmosphere. The verticality of the title design came to me as I was imagining a “jazz club sign” for that era.

“I asked Judy to evoke a sense of time, place and subject. The peacock flower was provided by the author and the other materials were tracked down by Judy. I was especially impressed with this solution that gracefully brought these elements of ideas and graphics into one coherent and effective presentation.”

“One of the most frequent compliments I get about my book is concerning the cover. I came to Judy with an unclear idea of what I wanted. She guided me step by step through the process, asked all the right questions and created a cover that I’m proud of. It is eye-catching and completely conveys the message of the book. My cover was ready sooner than I had projected and exceeded
my expectations.”

“The remarkable thing about Judy’s work on the cover was that she didn’t let me get by with “good enough”. I was eager to get it sent off to the printer but she wasn’t satisfied that the photos I’d submitted gave the book the image that was needed. She suggested we set up something ourselves. We gathered the fruit and baked goods and she had the brilliant idea of using the side of the barn as a backdrop. We love the cover and so do our customers. The interior was superbly designed and laid out by her as well.”

We were thrilled with the jacket design of Unknown Soldiers. Judy solved a difficult and thematically challenging issue when we asked her to work with this photo of the three GIs, two of whom would be dead in a few weeks. By creating a montage with map and color, a new life and presence emerged with this wartime black and white photo. Buyers comment on what a handsome book it is. Thank you!

“Judy designed the cover for my second book. That was all I needed to see. For each of my subsequent books—five of them—I’ve requested that her skills and sensibility be employed to design their covers. With Fearless Writing Judy used color, texture, and excerpts from my writing to capture the book’s content and spirit. She’s an artist and a communicator par excellence.”

“It’s always a pleasure to see how Arisman Design Studio will solve a design. For this book jacket we wanted to grab the reader’s attention with an edgy and unusual solution for a book that discusses creative methods of teaching in public schools. With that direction, Judy came back with several ideas based on her research for images that might
best bring out the book’s unique qualities. It did not take long after this presentation of ideas for the final jacket to take its successful conclusion.”

“I came to Judy with the rough idea for a unique postcard cover that would conjure up strong feelings of days gone by from potential readers. Judy executed my vision perfectly, guiding my project along from start to finish. People’s comments on my website and blog are rarely about the book itself, but are always comments about how much they love the cover. The book will never be a best seller, but the cover is a keeper, thanks to Judy.”

I love working on these “small packages”. For the rattan backgrounds, I photographed two chairs in my home, then added special shapes for the frames, and added color to the archival photos. Overall, I chose soft color tones to reflect the graciousness of Eudora and her family. The simple script typeface was chosen that suggests handwriting from that era.

It was a joy to be asked by The Whale Center of New England to design this package. There were so many beautiful photos to work with. I chose this unusual close-up to be used on the cover. The two typefaces were combined together to echo the whale’s huge mouth and watery environment.

Poster made for the Boston Bar Foundation as a “Thank You” to it’s members for their donation to the renovation at 16 Beacon St, Boston. The stately blue color surrounding the photo came from the blue in the shutters, it’s also a nice compliment to the warm brick. This is a 5-color piece, the title, top and bottom, was a double hit of gold metallic on press.
